What is prenatal and postnatal leave (maternity leave)?

Maternity leave is a protected leave for working women regarding pregnancy and childbirth.
This is a system to avoid the risks of childbirth, prepare for childbirth, and recover physical strength after childbirth. This is stipulated by labor law.
There are different rules for "before birth (prenatal)" and "after birth (postnatal)."

6 weeks (42 days) before birth

This is a leave that a woman can take if she tells her company that she wants to take time off from work up to six weeks before the expected date of childbirth.

You don't have to force yourself to take maternity leave.
During maternity leave, you will not be paid, so if you want to work until the very last minute, you can consult with your company and hospital and work until your due day.

*The day of childbirth is also included in prenatal leave.

8 weeks (56 days) after birth

You must not work for 6 weeks from the expected date of childbirth. This is stipulated by labor law.

However, after 6 weeks, if the person wishes to work and their doctor has approved that it is safe for them to work at the company, they can.
If you want to work, be sure to apply to the company.

If you have a stillbirth or miscarriage

If the baby unfortunately dies, you can take postpartum leave if you are at least 4 months pregnant.
(In case of stillbirth or miscarriage after 4 months of pregnancy, a death notification must be submitted to the government office)

About maternity allowance

Salaries will not be paid during maternity leave.
However, if your company is a member of the Japan Health Insurance Association or a health insurance association, approximately 67% of your basic salary will be paid as maternity allowance.
(This is a guideline amount, so it may vary slightly)

There are conditions

●A company employee who is insured by the company's health insurance (self-enrolled)
●Childbirth after 4 months of pregnancy (85 days)
●Absent from work to prepare for childbirth (no salary paid)

You cannot receive a salary and maternity allowance at the same time.
You will only have one option, so consider whether you want to continue working while considering your physical condition.

*Maternity allowance will not be paid if you are enrolled in National Health Insurance or if you are a dependent rather than an insured person under health insurance.

What if the pregnant woman is not working for any company?

If the pregnant woman is not working and she lives with her husband as a dependant, no maternity allowance will be paid.
